Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue leading to reduced bone strength and a consequent increase in fracture risk. All fractures take their toll. They almost always produce pain when they first occur and produce at least a temporary impact on quality of life. Hip fractures threaten independence in the majority of individuals and are associated with a mortality of up to 20% during the year after the fracture. Identifying and treating patients who should be treated, as well as the availability of newer therapeutic agents, have the potential to significantly improve the lives of people with osteoporosis.
