Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, frequently progressive condition that affects approximately 1 to 1.3 million people in the United States. Substantial room for improvement in the care of patients with IBD is needed, as evidenced by a recent study of insurance claims that showed approximately 80% of 32,883 patients with IBD received suboptimal therapy. The outcomes of patients with IBD are diminished by multiple factors, including uncertainty about approaches to diagnosis, assessment, and treatment, as well as a lack of knowledge about available therapies. In this CME activity, expert gastroenterologists will discuss disease severity and therapeutic targets as well as new therapies for the treatment of IBD.
