Some instruments for determining the severity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are used in clinical trials, such as the Crohn's Disease Activity Index, the Mayo Score for Ulcerative Colitis, and the Physician Global Assessment. In clinical practice, these scores aren?t usually formally calculated, and the focus is on asking patients about symptoms such as abdominal pain, stool frequency, rectal bleeding, and quality of life. In this CME program, Dr. William Sandborn also emphasizes the concept of treat-to target, in which treatment goals evolve beyond the control of symptoms towards the tight control of objectively measured gastrointestinal inflammation.
