Despite the effectiveness of available anti-glaucoma medications, compliance is a large issue in patients with glaucoma. Sustained release (SR) platforms for anti-glaucoma medications may address this problem. Several systems are under development, and a few may be commercially available within the next few years. In this CME activity, the limitations of topical anti-glaucoma medications in terms of patient compliance and adherence to prescribed regimens will be described, as well as a review of emerging SR formulations of anti-glaucoma medications including their mechanism of action, efficacy, safety, and potential for improving adherence to therapy.
