The seasonal influenza outbreaks are most commonly caused by influenza A and B viruses. In healthy children influenza typically is a self-limited and uncomplicated disease. However, it can lead to severe morbidity and mortality in certain groups of children who are at increased risk of severe or complicated illness. Overall, influenza causes a high disease burden, and children are important vectors for the spread of the disease. Thus, it is imperative to increase influenza vaccination rates among children. There are currently 2 Food and Drug Administration-approved influenza vaccine production technologies, one that is egg-based and another that is cell-based. Although the egg-based approach is the more common and traditional technology, cell-based influenza vaccines possess several advantages over egg-based vaccines. In this podcast series, experts will discuss the importance of influenza vaccination in children and the differences in the technologies in influenza vaccine development. They will also review the clinical and real-world data regarding the use of the different vaccines used in the pediatric population and their relevance to clinical practice.
