The incidence of obesity has increased dramatically over the past 20 years and is considered to be an epidemic in the United States. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity now affects more than one-third (39.8%) of adults, as well as 20.6% of 12- to 19-year-olds in the United States. It is also a risk factor for some of the leading causes of preventable death, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and certain cancers. Despite the availability of clinical practice guidelines and effective therapies, they are not utilized by many health care providers. The Obesity Forum® 2019 CME series aims to provide health care professionals with guidance on the appropriate use of therapies and strategies for delivering individualized care to patients with overweight or obesity, including in adolescents, via a multidisciplinary team. It incorporates didactic presentations, interactive case-based discussions, and information about better application of information into clinical practice.
