Successful cataract surgery is a multifactorial process that relies on numerous interconnected assessment, planning, and execution procedures. Phacodynamics, the effects on the internal environment of the eye of the equipment used to perform the procedure, must be thoroughly understood in order to maintain a stable anterior chamber and to minimize damage due to heat produced by ultrasonic energy during phacoemulsification. New technologies, such as OCT and femtosecond laser, can be applied to several diagnostic and procedural components of the surgery. Astigmatism is now corrected during cataract surgery, using peripheral corneal relaxing incisions or toric intraocular lenses. The surgeon can select from a growing array of lenses to achieve the refractive outcomes desired by the patient. The educational goals of the publication series are widespread, encompassing multiple facets of cataract surgery.
