Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disorder of the ocular surface, with nearly 30 million adults in the United States reporting symptoms. Despite its high relevance, DED is often underdiagnosed and subsequently undertreated, resulting in significant loss of patient quality of life and decreased outcomes after refractive and cataract surgery. Because patient signs and symptoms often do not correlate with the severity of DED, prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential for the initiation of optimal therapeutic and management strategies. Furthermore, the understanding of underlying chronic inflammation as a key component in the pathogenesis of DED has revolutionized protocols for initial therapy. In this live activity, held in conjunction with OSN NY 2017, experts provide review of diagnostic modalities and therapeutic strategies for the management of DED, as well as provide guidance through the presentations of challenging clinical cases for their optimal integration into clinical practice.
