Activity Description

Vaccination is the best way to protect against influenza (flu) and possible complications, including pneumonia. Vaccination is especially important for people in groups that are at high risk for serious complications, hospitalization, or death.

Physicians and pharmacists are poised to influence older adults’ decisions to become immunized against potentially preventable diseases. The underutilization and failure of older adults to seek out immunizations may be attributed to unawareness of need or indication, suggesting there is a tremendous opportunity for health care professionals in the community to advance the public health through patient education.

To effectively fulfill their roles, physicians and pharmacists need education regarding the specific immunization needs for older adults, availability of current vaccine preparations, and evolving evidence-based recommendations. Along with enhanced knowledge of this complex area of public health service provision, the ability to effectively communicate this knowledge and educate patients along with other members of the health care team will be fostered.

Learning Objectives

After participating in the activity, learners should be better able to

  • Recall the epidemiology and costs associated with treatment of vaccine-preventable illness in older adults, while discussing the biological impact of aging on immunity
  • Identify the current immunization recommendations for influenza and pneumococcal vaccination for priority and at-risk groups, along with racial and ethnic disparities in adult immunization
  • Evaluate the health care provider’s role in improving vaccination rates in priority populations, contributing to a healthy lifestyle and a key piece in an interprofessional approach to healthy aging

Method of Participation

There are no fees to participate in the activity. To receive CME/ CPE credit and for physicians to be eligible to earn ABIM MOC points for your participation, please complete the post-test (achieving a passing grade of 70% or greater), and program evaluation. Your certificate can be printed immediately.

For pharmacists, a statement of credit will be issued through CPE Monitor in 6-8 weeks. Only learners who provided valid NABP e-Profile ID numbers and month and day of birth (MMDD) will be submitted to CPE Monitor for official record of credit.

CLAIMING MOC POINTS: If you intend to claim MOC points for your participation, you will need to provide your unique ABIM ID when completing the activity evaluation. Physicians who do not know their ABIM ID can log in to the ABIM website at — your ABIM ID will appear next to your name.

By claiming MOC points, you are agreeing to have your participation completion information to be shared with the ACCME and the ABIM. Your points will be automatically submitted to the ABIM on your behalf; please allow 6-8 weeks for your points to display on the ABIM website.
