Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a deterioration or breakdown of the eye's macula. At present, pharmacotherapy is available only for late neovascular AMD. However, the AREDS and AREDS 2 studies have demonstrated a substantial reduction in the risk of progression to the advanced forms of the disease in patients taking antioxidant supplements. The prospect of effective therapies in the near future, together with an increasing incidence of AMD in an aging population, has led to increased interest in early, accurate diagnosis and classification of AMD, as well as medications to effectively treat it. This educational program will address evidence for optimizing treatment regimens, as well as the potential clinical utility of emerging treatments for early-to-late AMD.
