Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in the United States, is an age-related ocular condition in which nutritional risk factors have been evaluated extensively with observational and interventional studies. These studies have generated interest in micronutrients with antioxidant capabilities because of the potential importance of oxidative damage in AMD. The importance of dietary supplementation in the management of the dry form of AMD is evident from the results of the Age-related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). For AMD, the AREDS formulation reduced the risk of progression to advanced AMD by 25% at 5 years. This CME activity will discuss the risk factors associated with the development of AMD, as well as assess the latest clinical evidence and advances regarding nutritional supplements for the management of patients with AMD.
