Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in the United States, is an ocular condition in which nutritional risk factors have been evaluated extensively with observational and interventional studies. More recent studies also implicate blue light and ultraviolet (UV) light to damage ocular health and potentially aggravate AMD. The importance of dietary supplementation in the management of the dry form of AMD is evident from the results of established studies, and newer options are available to help minimize the impact of UV and blue light. However, retina specialists continue to lack knowledge regarding patients who may benefit from supplementation as well as the latest data regarding the optimal supplements. In this educational activity, expert physicians will discuss risk factors for AMD, the impact of blue light on ocular health, and also the latest evidence on nutritional supplements in AMD.
