Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the most common cause of reduced visual acuity in patients with diabetes. Globally, the prevalence of adult diabetes is anticipated to rise and, as a result, it is expected that diabetic retinopathy (DR) and DME will continue to be commonplace, becoming an increasingly important factor in the development of blindness in this population. It has been reported that all the major pathologic processes of DR are susceptible to glucocorticoid treatment. In this interactive, case-based educational activity, leading ophthalmologists discuss the role of corticosteroids and combination therapy in the management of DME.
