Although anti-VEGF therapy has revolutionized the management of diabetic macular edema (DME), it is far from being a panacea. Many patients do not respond to treatment with these agents, and many more are undertreated due to practical difficulties that surface due to frequent therapy and assessment. Clinicians need to consider other existing therapies when anti-VEGF fails, and to be aware of the evidence for their use either alone or in combination with anti-VEGF, in order to increase efficacy while reducing the frequency of treatment. In this continuing medical education activity, expert physicians will assess new information regarding the efficacy and safety of treatment options other than anti-VEGF therapy for patients with DME, and compare clinical outcomes in patients with DME who have received anti-VEGF monotherapy versus multimodal therapy.
