The MicroDrug Pump is designed to administer medication on a fixed schedule, with a reservoir of 4 to 9 months worth of drug. The reservoir can be refilled transconjunctivally in clinic. With electrolysis driving the pumping action, dosing has been consistent. In animal trials, no bleb formation or infections and minimal tissue reaction have been reported, while in 10 patients in Phase I trials, no severe adverse events or foreign body sensation have been reported, and predetermined safety and surgical feasibility criteria have been met. Phase II designs are underway.
