The goal of the vitreous surgeon is to perform the desired surgical intervention, with minimum deleterious effects to the ocular tissues, and in the most efficient way possible. An understanding of the principles of fluidics is of vital importance to all vitreoretinal surgeons to achieve these goals. Advances in technology provide surgeons with increasing choices in the settings they are able to select for surgery. It is important to note that the best technology is the one that works best the hand of each individual surgeon. Therefore, it is essential for the clinician to stay up to date with current instrumentation and techniques in order to make informed decisions about which ones will work best for his or her patients.
