IL-17 is slowly being recognized as having an important role in the development and persistence of certain autoimmune and rheumatic diseases. This activity will discuss the discovery timeline for the IL-23/Th17 pathway, its specific cells and cytokines, as well as how these cytokines and related molecules are involved in disease development and homeostasis. It will also focus on disease associations, and how knowledge of this pathway can assist in the development of therapeutic strategies for a variety of different diseases, particularly in the fields of dermatology and rheumatology.
