Osteoarthritis (OA) is a worldwide public health problem and often causes pain, loss of function, and disability. It has an increasing social impact due to the rising mean age of the population, increasing rates of obesity, and a growing emphasis on physical activity in all age groups. Cartilage possesses limited regeneration properties, and joint tissue damage and osteoarthritis may result from loss of proper tissue homeostasis due to trauma or chronic repetitive overload or could be the result of metabolic and biological predispositions.
