For years, rheumatologists have treated patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using a combination of observation and intuition, commonly referred to as a “gestalt.” However, new concepts recently have come forward: measuring disease activity using a composite score and treating to a target (T2T)1. While much has been made of these ideas, much is still misunderstood. It is the intent of this article to help clarify some of the confusion around the idea of disease activity measures and T2T.
